Thank you UplitReads / Amazon Publishing / Brilliance Audio for the gifted copy。I have been a fan of Emily Bleeker’s books for quite some time now, ever since reading her book Working Fire。 I was excited when I saw she had a new one coming out, and that it paired two of my favorite genres – historical fiction and mystery – and I loved it!!!This book grabbed me right from the beginning and once I started it, I found I was totally captivated。 The story lines were compelling and had just the right Thank you UplitReads / Amazon Publishing / Brilliance Audio for the gifted copy。I have been a fan of Emily Bleeker’s books for quite some time now, ever since reading her book Working Fire。 I was excited when I saw she had a new one coming out, and that it paired two of my favorite genres – historical fiction and mystery – and I loved it!!!This book grabbed me right from the beginning and once I started it, I found I was totally captivated。 The story lines were compelling and had just the right amount of complexity so as to keep me invested throughout。 I am always a fan of the dual timeline and was equally drawn to both timelines here。 This definitely has that story-within-a-story feel to it, which I love。 As much as I wanted to know what had happened to Evelyn in the past, I was just as curious as to what was going on with Hannah in the present。I loved that this book is based on Emily’s great-aunt。 I always love when authors use real life to inspire their stories and while I did not know that going into it, it now makes this story all the more incredible。 And the use of letters to bring Evelyn’s story to life in the past really drew me in。This is the type of book that sneaks up on you as to just how thought-provoking it really ends up being。 The author manages to weave in some important, rather timely topics, both in the past and the present timelines, handling them in tactful, tasteful ways。 To that end, it really would make a great pick for book clubs as there is much to unpack and discuss!I love Emily’s writing and even though this newest one is a bit of a departure from her previous books, I absolutely loved this one and highly recommend it!Audio thoughts: I was able to listen to this one and I thought Shannon McManus did a fantastic job with the narration。 She really brought this story to life, giving the characters unique personalities and infusing just the right amount of emotion and tension into her voice as needed。You can see all my reviews at: https://www。alwayswithabook。com/ 。。。more

I LOVED this book! This is one that women definitely need to read! I loved the mystery mixed with history mixed with feminism, racism, and mental health。 Even though there were a lot of topics addressed, it was really well written and developed, and I will now be reading more Emily Bleeker books! I love how the author made Evelyn’s letters part of the book and not just a summary。 This was a great contrast to the use of text messages throughout the story to show the evolution of time and history。 I LOVED this book! Unfortunately this book didn’t do it for me。 It seemed to take forever to get into this story。 This is the first book I’ve read by Emily Bleeker and I was really looking forward to it。 I felt too much time was taken in the beginning going over time and again all of the main character, Hannah Williamson’s personal weaknesses。 The most interesting parts of the book were Evelyn’s letters that had been written to the paper Hannah writes for。 There’s a dual timeline here of present day with Hannah an Unfortunately this book didn’t do it for me。 It seemed to take forever to get into this story。 This is the first book I’ve read by Emily Bleeker and I was really looking forward to it。 I felt too much time was taken in the beginning going over time and again all of the main character, Hannah Williamson’s personal weaknesses。 The most interesting parts of the book were Evelyn’s letters that had been written to the paper Hannah writes for。 There’s a dual timeline here of present day with Hannah and the 1930’s with Evelyn。 I really wanted to like this book but just couldn’t。 The book does touch on issues such as mental health, suicide, rape, and systematic racism。 Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing fir an uncorrected proof of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review。 。。。more

It was a great mix of mystery and self discovery/recovery。 I loved that the book had layers of storytelling; we learned not only about Evelyn's past, but also about Hannah's recovery in the modern world。 There were references to contemporary topics which made the book feel relevant and interesting。Hannah's own love life was tumultuous and frustrating at points, but nevertheless I couldn't stop looking forward to parts that would address her breakup。 I enjoyed the hint of a new romance that was woven throughout the story too!Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it wrapped up rather nicely, so if you like a clear cut ending then this one is for you!TW: abuse, pregnancy loss, racial trauma, prejudice, suicide and depression 。。。more

I just felt that the book could have been trimmed down by 100 pages because the pacing was slow at times。Hannah Williamson is down on her luck。 In the last year she caught her live-in boyfriend of seven years cheating on her。 From here she spiralied into a depression that left her dependent on sleeping pills and eventually got her fired from her position as a star reporter for The Chicago Tribune。 She also lost her beloved father to cancer。In order to escape the reality her life has become she has escaped to Senatobia, Mississippi to take care of her ailing grandmother。 She is also keeping busy with a position at The Record that is way beneath her。 While there she is asked to archive boxes of old articles and materials from the publication。 This seems like a real kick in the gut but during this menial task she stumbles upon a mysterious series of letters from a woman named Evelyn circa 1930。 Hannah becomes obsessed with Evelyn’s story and finding all of the pieces of the puzzle。Not alone in her quest, is Guy, a language arts teacher and handyman to her grandmother that she has convinced to help her。While reading Evelyn’s tale Hannahe reflects on her own life and it helps her to begin to put things in perspective。 She had gone down a dark path after her break-up。 I could totally relate to these feelings。 Along the way she learns more about her own family history too。 Her father kept them away from Mississippi because he was embarrassed of their racist ways。I absolutely loved the sensitivity that Bleeker took with Guy’s character, who happens to be a black man living in Mississippi。 Although she is still missing her ex, Alex, she soon learns there are plenty of fish in the sea。 Both Guy and senator Pete Dawson are vying for her attention。 Once everything is resolved Hannah learns more about her family history and herself and the things that are truly important in life。 I recommend reading this book especially if you like historical fiction and mystery! 。。。more

This book grabbed my attention within the first few pages and kept me turning the pages as I read it all in two sittings。 The storyline was intriguing - Hannah moves to Mississippi to help care for her grandmother and takes a job at a local newspaper。 On an assignment to archive old articles she starts digging into the history of one particular story。 During her time in Mississippi she also meets a local middle school teacher, Guy。 Guy assists Hannah as she continues to investigate her mystery。 This book grabbed my attention within the first few pages and kept me turning the pages as I read it all in two sittings。 The storyline was intriguing - Hannah moves to Mississippi to help care for her grandmother and takes a job at a local newspaper。 On an assignment to archive old articles she starts digging into the history of one particular story。 During her time in Mississippi she also meets a local middle school teacher, Guy。 Guy assists Hannah as she continues to investigate her mystery。 Although not the usual romance genre I read, I liked the switch to a mystery type of storyline。 The characters are well written, believable, and keep you entertained。 I really didn't know what the end would bring until I was almost there - it kept me guessing。 Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an ebook in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

With What's Left Unsaid, Emily Bleeker gives readers a book with two complicated and compelling story lines, each filled with complex characters and situations that reach us, teach us, and keep us turning pages to discover the resolution。Chicago journalist, Hannah Williamson, has found the last year filled with a crushing series of losses。 Unmoored and reeling, she finds herself trying to pull herself together in small town Senatobia, Mississippi, as she cares for her 91-year-old grandmother who With What's Left Unsaid, Emily Bleeker gives readers a book with two complicated and compelling story lines, each filled with complex characters and situations that reach us, teach us, and keep us turning pages to discover the resolution。Chicago journalist, Hannah Williamson, has found the last year filled with a crushing series of losses。 Unmoored and reeling, she finds herself trying to pull herself together in small town Senatobia, Mississippi, as she cares for her 91-year-old grandmother who has broken both ankles in a fall。 Now working for the small weekly paper in town, Hannah is given the task of clearing out the basement, a room filled with boxes and file cabinets, archiving the papers as she goes。 Soon she stumbles upon a series of rejected letters written in the 1930s by a young girl, Evelyn, that tells of her family, first love, and of being shot and paralyzed at the age of 14。 Everyone, including Evelyn, assumed she'd die, but she somehow survived。 Hannah becomes enthralled with Evelyn and wants to uncover the rest of her story。 Is she still alive? Who shot her? Enlisting the help of a friend of her grandmother, Guy Franklin, an English teacher at the middle school, Evelyn struggles to find the ending of the story, even as it seems her boss and others are equally as determined that they not learn the truth。 As Hannah seeks the truth about Evelyn, she must also come to terms with her own life and the direction that she wants it to take。 This is a wonderful read that had me fully engaged with both story lines and all of the many characters。 I have enjoyed each of Ms。 Bleeker's previous books and this one is remarkable as well!I highly recommend it!My thanks to NetGalley and to Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel。 All opinions (and any errors) expressed in this review are my own。 The book is scheduled to be published on 7/27/21。 。。。more

I’ve read almost all of her books and I think she’s a great author。 Her writing style flows well, is easy to read and her storylines are always really interesting to me。 I think I’d consider this books genre to be classified as a mystery。 It’s the story of Hannah Williamson, a newspaper journalist who after suffering a breakup with her boyfriend finds her life spiraling out of control。 She loses her boyfriend to another woman which in turn causes her to lose her mental health and she attempts suicide which in turn causes her to lose her job at the Chicago Tribune。 Later she also loses her dad to cancer。 After all of this, she heads to Senatobia, Mississippi to try and put her life back together along with helping to take care of her ailing 91 year old grandmother。 Once there she starts working at the Tate County Record。 It’s there where the story begins。 This story is filled with secrets, secrets that some people don’t want uncovered。 They go as far as paying people off to keep these secrets。 Hannah finds some rejected letters in the Records basement while backing up archives on the internet。 She takes a real interest in these letters written by a mysterious Evelyn and wants to be sure her story is told。 This storyline has a really nice twist to it that brings everything out into the open exposing all the secrets and finding hidden family。 It’s a really great story and one I’m sure many will enjoy as much as I did。 I’d like to thank NetGalley for the arc that I obtained off the Read Now section。 I really enjoyed reading this and am giving it a 5 star rating! 。。。more
